Accountability is Compassion
Several clients have asked me about accountability during quarantine. "How do I give feedback when I know my employee is stressed about COVID-19?" and "What do I say to my team member who has two children at home, but is missing deadlines? Am I a mean boss if I call them out?"
This does not have to be a tricky situation. If you lead with authenticity and empathy, accountability is easy.
1. Start with curiosity. Ask questions. Let them know you have been thinking about them.
2. Listen to listen, not listen to respond. Take real time to listen wholeheartedly. They may open the door to giving feedback by owning their mistakes.
3. Name exactly what you see. Do not make things general. This feedback is not about the entire team. I always say “I am about to give you some feedback”, so they can mentally prepare themselves.
4. Use "I" Language. Use phrases like “I’ve noticed this…” or “The story I am telling myself is…” or “This is happening and I want to help.” There will be less tension and more open communication.
5. Follow-Up. Come back after a few days and ask questions about their stressors and celebrate successes. Recognize we are in unprecedented times, but own your role as a leader! You got this!
